Just thinking over it all, I'm just disappointed that many of the adults here in the U.S. could be classified as braindead compared to the intelligence and open mindedness of people even in middle school, and of the many amazing people in my life. I'm surprised I've never met any of these types, but I am grateful that I was raised the way I was. The fact that even a little compassion or sympathy is lost to so many is a shame, as well as revealing. I remember hearing that special phrase at a young age, treat others as you want to be treated. Though I more prefer, imagine yourself in someone else's shoes. It really would give perspective on things. Too bad a lot of people don't have the cognitive thinking to imagine such a thing.

Rerun moment... 🤷🏻‍♀️🤣 For the life of me, I cannot understand why anyone would think receiving Asylum is that EASY...... I've known people that were detained for YEARS, trying to get Asylum. And US (before trump) always maintained a "list" of countries, with "special rules" for Asylum. And that was primarily due to their homeland being too destructive, fearful, violence, religious persecution, etc... And even when they fit those categories PERFECTLY, the amount of time that they need to wait, while being detained & treated like P.O.S., is EXTREMELY LENGTHY. Immigration has attempted to detain people who weren't even seeking asylum. But they treated them as if they were. (Someone I knew ended up with a "bogus" passport -- she honestly didn't know. She came to America to go shopping; merely for couple of days or so & fly back home. All she wanted to do was go back home to China. But because China was one of those countries on "that list", they would NOT release her. So she was detained for slightly over 6 months, before they FINALLY allowed her to be released back to China.) So when people think they know about these things and think that it's just "plain & simple"; PLEASE understand that it's FAR FAR from being plain & simple. NOTHING about immigration is THAT SIMPLE.

  • Eve Fox
    Eve Fox7 dögum síðan

To be fair, SOME people from third world countries like the Middle Eastern ones who apply for Asylum, really shouldn't be allowed in. It's not about the color of their skin or appearance at all, it's where they're coming from and what their culture is like there. Some people are really years behind culturally and they just live by their own rules from their country. They don't adapt to ours. In some Islamic areas, women don't have any rights and have arranged marriages, for example. People coming from Mexico, definitely are usually more likely to fit in. It's really a grey area that requires more critical thinking and better solutions, so people fresh out of these bad places don't just start raping or hurting people.

I dont have a basic issue with immigration. Lots of great people immigrate all over the world. BUT, you don't want them in camps there, you don't want them in camps here. What do you want? You want us to hand them free housing, food and care until their accepted or rejected? We already have a public housing/ housing crisis here. Should we add another million a year to that? It's not reasonable to endlessly accept people we have to pay for. Although I sure shes lovely, what does this 63 yr old women have to contribute to our society? She will just come here and get in the welfare system. She's too old to work for much longer. We need to be more like Canada. They are more picky about who gets to go there. Taking in millions of uneducated, unskilled people who refuse to assimilate and live on tax dollars is useless. If Mexico was forced to face civil liberties violations and other organizations then the country would improve and less people would want to leave. Then the smartest people would stay there and continue to improve their own country. With chain migration and asylum its anyone regardless of if they can support themselves or not. It's a messy system. I don't see it really changing for the better

Please Do A Piece on Michael Jackson Hi, I’m writing to you because Last Week Tonight as opposed to other such shows actually cares about issues rather than chasing the headlines. It has been 11 years since Michael Jackson passed away yet to this day what the common consensus is that he is a taboo subject for many. I recall you guys once did a piece on Public Shaming. Michael Jackson was a genius, an abused child. He was strange. He was one of the few major stars from the 80s who came out of the 80s without a heroine addiction. He in his own way did many, Many strange things, but so do most other superstars. And more than others he actually cared. About children, about the earth. About the issues we are discussing to this day. While Icons like Freddy Mercury, Elvis Pressley, Prince, Beetles and many more are known for their good works, Michael is known for the something which he has repeatedly been acquitted for. It’s the truth that anyone looking for will find instantly but due to the “where there is smoke there is a fire” narrative, even 11 years after his death, the new media treats him like a criminal. All his trial pages are open for the public to read. He WAS weird. Making a ranch called neverland, hanging out with children. Trusting people he shouldn’t. But I urge you please cover him, hear beyond the noise like you guys often do. The most successful African American Artist of all time was a humble man child, who respected women, loved children and cared about our environment. He was not a heroine junkie, a private man who did not share his disease even all the way back in 1993 even though he was accused of wanting to become a “White Man”. He was eccentric. Hanging out with animals and caring about them. theobjectivestandard.com/2020/02/justice-for-michael-jackson/ This article covers multiple sources, some of which I had read previously. Michael Jackson was a multi talented millionaire pop star, who was not an alcoholic, was a caring father, a filial son, Treated women with respect, cared about the planet and it’s beings. The press that constantly kept DASHING him, had found a way to subvert their guilt. All those years of calling him a “Jacko”, “monkey” and many more hurtful things was justified if he was a paedophile. They NEEDED him to be guilty. Such a man cannot exist in Hollywood. Such public shaming had allowed and to this day allows Michael to be a victim to all this slander. Please do a piece, if not one that exonerates him then one that once and for all cements the fact the Michael Jackson, the greatest pop star, the first African American Idol was a paedophile. Not through unknown sources or flimsy headlines but through concrete proof. A news echoing in a closed chamber will not reach anyone, most fans who what to know the truth know it, other people will read the headlines but not the explanations. It’s about time the general public knows. Please do a piece on Michael, the blatant mistreatment by the media, The systematic racism he faced during his trials. Please don’t let the first African American Singer be remembered for the things he did not do, He was weird, weird enough to annoy Freddy Mercury with Bubbles feedbacks, weird enough to let kids crack raw eggs over Michael Jackson, Weird enough to play water balloons with children. But he was not a paedophile and the world needs to acknowledge that. He was in no way a “Perfect Human” but he tried his best to live right and we should not punish him for doing that. On this year please exonerate this Black man, the Justice System has done it two decades ago, it’s about time everyone else does. Please do a piece on Michael Jackson. #spreadtheawareness #justiceformichael #hedeservedbetter

The last bit about asylum-seekers praying for Joe Biden to win is very reminiscent of at least a dozen refugees here attempting suicide when they heard our current Prime Minister won the election.

Keep up the amazing work John iver and your amazing team of writers and producers. One last thing, I know he has before but not enough in my opinion, we all know there are bad police officers in America and every other country in the world but I would like John and his writers to add into these videos that there are a lot of amazing police officers and they do deserve credit considering the job and hatred they are upagainst every day.

@Inner Descent True. Then I'll clarify that sentiment with this: If you vote for someone who runs on the above sentiment, you are guilty of supporting that sentiment. If you do not speak out against and truly defy that sentiment, then you are complicit. If you call yourself a Christian, then exhibit Christ-like characteristics based on what Christ said and did and taught. The above sentiment is integral to the Republican party's platform, as well as Trumpism, and is strongly associated with white nationalism; if you support any of the above, then you are guilty of supporting that sentiment. You don't need to personally believe it to be guilty of sharing it. So if it bothers you, find or found a new party that you can truly believe in and be proud of, because if you don't, you will forever be included in generalizations of that sentiment because of the overwhelming support for it of others who claim those same identities.

The procedures used to derive detailed estimates of the undocumented population are described in *"Democratizing Data about Unauthorized Residents in the United States:"* by a Robert Warren (2014). CMS used its annual estimates of the undocumented population for 2010 to 2017 - by state of residence, country of origin, and year of entry - to which the information was then compiled utilizing Robert Warren's bias methods - and then this information described in this journal was then posted on the HSDL website by an Andrea Page. journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/2331502419830339 (Journal on Migration and Human Security aka Democratizing Data about Unauthorized Residents in the United States) de·moc·ra·tize /dəˈmäkrəˌtīz/ verb: gerund or present participle: democratizing introduce a democratic system or democratic principles to. I read from multiple human rights reports that many detention facilities were spraying industrial-grade chemicals (Undiluted HDQ-Neutral) in thirty minute intervals onto basically every surface and inevitably onto the actual people. They do this under the pretense of basically melting away all contagion, but they're basically killing the detainees. People have continuously complained of bone pain, burns on skin and mucus membrane, and bleeding from eyes, mouth, nose, and from other sores. It's extremely fucked. The photos are just human chainlink kennels that they cram everyone in, they literally poison them non-stop and ignore/suppress complaints. Also written was the fact that under Trump's administration was the biggest spike in detainee death counts in like ten years (if I remember right) and a staggering amount of them were from suicided. People would just hang themselves inside the communal cells.

People should not be criticising drug cartels, they should be criticising the police and army and other pro-regime drug warrior forces (including mercenaries) trying to kill, torture or cage cartel leaders and incinerate their product and seize their cash. Any person who materially cooperates with DEA or local equivalent deserves all the "fear" in the world, and no mercy from those whose community they seek to harm. #exterminateratsandroaches

@Inner Descent 100% agree! A lot of people think drawing the line at heroine makes sense, but everywhere that's decriminalised heroin has had astounding results, people can get a legal pure medicne that gets them through the day and they mostly hold down jobs, have a great family life and aren't criminals just because their medicne is taboo. I used to be addicted to cigarettes, would stress out like mad without them, they are worse for you than pharmaceutical heroin... we shouldn't judge people on what compound works for them, everyone is different, most people rely on a drug of some sort to get them through the day, caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, cannabis ect. Time to stop the stupid laws!

What is REALLY sad is that the Trumpies use the acts of the gangs in other country as proof that the migrants shouldn't be allowed in. Cause, like, we KNOW that the US doesn't have a gang problem, right? Speaking of which, the Republican Party should be classified as a GANG!!!!!!

@Inner Descent No, a group that relies on violence to achieve their ends is a gang. Until the Capitol Hill riots, I considered them simply as a group with what I consider dumb policies. But now they are using the same tactics that gangs use. My post has nothing in common with Stalinist Russia

The biggest problem (in the UK at least) is that we don’t assimilate immigrants properly. We need to invest more in mechanisms to help migrants (and especially refugees) fit in here and contribute to society)

God bless you, John Oliver, sincerely; truthfully, in Jesus Christ's living, holy, sovereign name. All is well, content and full of joy in Christ. We love you. Merry Christmas. I thank God for everyday He gives you. God is love. God bless, save, protect, empower and have mercy upon America, in Jesus Christ's returning, wrathful Judge name. Fear not. Fear God only. Psalm 117 1 O praise the Lord, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people. 2 For his merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the Lord endureth for ever. Mark 1:3-4 3 The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. 4 John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. John 3:16 Authorized (King James) Version 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

2 Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth. 3 For I rejoiced greatly, when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth. 4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth. 3 John 2-4 Authorized (King James) Version

I know this is an American-centric show but if you could roast the shit out of Australia for their treatment of asylum seekers then that would be dandy. The lack of political willpower on either side of Australian politics means there is currently no one to vote for to fix one of Australia's greatest shames and a long standing human rights violation.
